Khatrast literally means straight road, hence shawls with stripe designs are called as such. The Ashjar is a contemporary take on the elaborate vintage Khatrast shawls. Meandering leafy stalks in beige and maroon are woven into a rich charcoal pashmina base. 

The famous Kashmir shawls that were at the height of fashion in the late 18th and 19th centuries were woven in a fine twill tapestry technique called Kani. The technique gets its name from the small eyeless bobbin called Kan, used to weave the design into fabric. This exquisite technique survives today only in the Kashmir valley.
